It's not a stretch to say that we are a people obsessed with happiness. All of us want to be happy. And yet, for as much as we pursue happiness, we seem equally confused about what will actually make us happy. 

On the eve of His crucifixion and with His final words to His Disciples, Jesus zeros in on our joy. But we're talking about a kind of joy that is far more nuanced and true than most of us can imagine (or may have ever known). What is this joy? How do we experience it? Join us as we learn.

It's hard to imagine a society living with "troubled hearts" more than ours. The same was true for Jesus' disciples, whose anxiety and fear were at an all-time high on the eve of His crucifixion. Getting catfished! It's the sad, online phenomenon in which a person is made to live in good faith to another person who doesn't actually exist. Sadly, many today are living in good faith to a God, who doesn't actually exit. Jesus once famously said that love for those who already love us is nothing unique. Everyone does that (Luke 6:32). But where do you learn the kind of love that welcomes-in the unwelcome - the kind of love that is truly radical in it's hospitality. There's only one place! 

When all is said and done, we all want to look back on our lives and know that they haven’t been wasted - that they’ve counted and had meaning and purpose. According to the Harvard Business Review, however, most of us feel we’ve never found our purpose, that we’ve lost it, or are just falling short of it. Join us as we consider the purpose for which Jesus actually died, and the purpose He, therefore, intends your life to have.

It used to be that in a world of broken institutions and communities, church was a kind of safe harbor - a place where any and all could know and be known. Sadly recent and not-so recent revelations indicate the opposite. Church is often a place where those who ought to be cared-for feel unsafe and even abused. Listen in as we discuss safety in the church and the hope the Gospel provides for not just churches, but any community desiring to be safe!

What's your passion? It's a tough question isn't it? On the one hand, we're skeptical of those who are super passionate, but on the other our culture tells us that we need to 'find our passion' in order to be happy. It might come as a surprise, but  we are, perhaps, closer today to the time of Jesus than we've ever been. We, like those whom Jesus encountered, are toggling between discouragement at the various ways in which everything around us seems to brow-beat with messages of needing to be better and do better, and disinterest with any fresh message of hope. When Jesus arrived on the scene, He too found folks both discouraged from religious rules and regulations continually communicating their inadequacy and inability, and  disinterested in any new message of hope. It's into that context in which Jesus gave His "Kingdom Parables." J.R.R. Tolkien famously said that in the Bible we find a story that "were it not true, we would nevertheless, want it to be true." The Gospel of Jesus Christ is that by Jesus' life, death, resurrection and ascension, we who believe are freed from the past penalty, present power, and future presence of sin and brokenness. To the degree that we are able to bring that Gospel to bear on the everyday stuff of life; that's the degree to which that stuff gets fixed. It's a big claim, but it's the claim the Apostle Paul makes throughout 1 Corinthians.

Is it possible to enjoy a really clear understanding of your personal goals and sense of purpose in life? According to the Apostle Paul, it is. We look at Paul's farewell address in his seminal letter to the Romans and see that the more we really understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ and resolve to live in response to it, the more we find that clarity for which we are all longing.

At different times and in different ways, we're all asking some form of the following question, "Why is this happening? What is going on? What's next...God what in the world are you up to?" In this message we learn that what God's up to, not only in the world, but in each of our lives is both for our good and His glory! The bigger question is, "will we be up to what He's up to?"
